A tracksuit is only as good as its weaker half. Most matching sets nail the hoodie and phone in the pants. Here, both pieces are cut from the same fleece, dyed in the same batch, and finished with the same rubberised logo, so the set reads as one outfit instead of two things that happen to be the same colour.
The hoodie
Oversized through the body with dropped shoulders and a slightly cropped length, so it sits at the hip rather than bunching at the waistband. The hood is double-layered and holds its shape when it's down.
- Pullover with a kangaroo pocket, or full-zip with a stand collar
- Rubberised "ESSENTIALS" on the chest; back-logo sets carry it across the shoulders
- Ribbed cuffs and hem that recover after washing instead of going slack
The sweatpants
A relaxed, tapered leg that stacks lightly over trainers. The waistband is wide, with a flat drawcord, and the rise is high enough that the hoodie hem and the waistband overlap cleanly.
- Side pockets deep enough for a phone and keys without printing
- Elasticated cuffs on the ankle, no exposed drawstring
- Small matching logo on the thigh, nothing loud
Colour guide: which set to pick
Essentials colours are deliberately quiet, which makes them easy to wear but hard to tell apart on a product photo. This is how they behave in real light.
Fit and sizing
These sets are built to be worn roomy. The question isn't "what's my size" so much as "how oversized do I want this to look". Use the table, then check the measurements on the product page if you're right on the line.
| You usually wear | For the classic oversized look | For a cleaner, closer fit |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Small | Small (don't go lower) |
| Medium | Medium | Small |
| Large | Large | Medium |
| XL | XL | Large |
How it holds up in a Canadian year
Fleece this weight is comfortable from roughly 5°C up to about 18°C on its own. Outside that window, the set becomes a layer rather than the whole outfit.
November to March
Wear the full set under a puffer or a wool overcoat. The hoodie's hood sits comfortably under a jacket collar, and the tapered leg tucks into boots without bulk. Dark heather grey hides road salt best.
April, May, September, October
This is the sweet spot. The set is warm enough for a morning coffee run in Toronto or a damp evening in Vancouver, and you can push the sleeves up when the sun comes out.
June to August
Split the set. The sweatpants work for cool evenings and the hoodie earns its keep on air-conditioned flights, cottage nights and late patios. Oatmeal and desert sand look right in summer light.
Three ways to wear it
Head to toe
Full set, white or cream low-top trainers, no visible socks. Keep everything else off except a watch. This is the look the line was designed for and the one that photographs best.
Split the set
Hoodie over a plain white tee with straight-leg jeans; sweatpants with a fitted black tee and a bomber. You get three outfits out of one purchase, which is the real argument for buying the matching set over a single hoodie.
- Match your trainer colour to the lettering, not the fleece
- One tone darker in outerwear keeps the set from washing out
- Push hoodie sleeves to mid-forearm to show the ribbed cuff
- Oatmeal and sand sets: go beige or cream on footwear, not bright white
Keeping it looking new
Rubberised and applique logos are the first thing to go on a badly washed tracksuit. A little care keeps the set looking like week one for a long time.
- Cold wash, inside out, with similar colours
- Skip fabric softener; it flattens the brushed inside
- Air dry or tumble on low. High heat shrinks the cuffs and lifts the logo
- Never iron over the lettering
- Wash top and bottom together so they fade at the same rate
- Store folded, not on a hanger, to keep the shoulders from stretching

Questions people ask before ordering
Is the Essentials tracksuit sold as a set or as separate pieces?
Everything on this page is a matching set: hoodie and sweatpants together, in the same size and colour. If you only want one half, the hoodies and sweatpants collections are sold individually.
Does the tracksuit run big?
Yes. The cut is intentionally oversized with dropped shoulders. Most people take their usual size for the classic look, or one size down for a closer fit. Taller customers should stay true to size for the leg length.
What's the difference between the 1977 and the regular Essentials tracksuit?
The 1977 line uses a felt applique "1977" with "God Is Great" lettering instead of the rubberised block logo, and comes in a slightly heavier fleece. The fit is the same.
Is the fleece warm enough for a Canadian winter?
On its own, it's a spring and fall piece. From November through March it works as a mid-layer under a proper winter jacket, which is how most people in Toronto, Calgary and Montreal wear it.
Can men and women wear the same sets?
The fit is unisex. Women typically size down once for a relaxed-but-not-swamped look; the Desert Sand and Oatmeal sets are the most popular choices.
Will the logo peel after washing?
Not if you wash cold, inside out, and keep it away from high dryer heat. Follow the care notes above and the rubberised lettering stays flat and intact.
Do you ship outside Canada?

Build the rest of the wardrobe
Most people who buy a tracksuit come back for a second hoodie in a different colour, or a tee to wear underneath when they split the set.
